"Niagara Furniture Bank helped me at a point in my life when I had to choose between heat and food. Despite my embarrassment and shame, their team offered me support when I needed it most."
“I’ve had a rough go the last few years. I got myself involved with some people from a crowd I am not proud of now, but thought I could trust at the time. I had be struggling mentally and financially and I was offered assistance from my “friends”. I wound up in a sex trafficking ring, my worst nightmare come true. It took a lot for me to seek asylum. I thought I deserved to be there and had no other choices in life. I’ve been moved around a lot since and have not had a place to call home, since I left my family home some years ago. When I finally made it to a safe place in Niagara, I felt like I was finally in the right place, a safe place. Niagara has been an amazing community for me to grow and feel some peace in. When I reached out to the Niagara Furniture Bank for further assistance with furnishing my new apartment, they took me in and listened to my story with the most kind and caring compassion. The delivery drivers just left and I sit here in my new apartment, in my new community, with all my amazing new furniture they have been able to provide. I can’t tell you the last time I had a full night sleep but my new bed looks incredibly inviting. I feel safe. I feel loved and cared for. Thank you, Niagara Furniture Bank for restoring my hope and providing a safe space for all.” -Jason
“I got pregnant at the age of 17 and my life has not been the same since. I love my son with everything I have but it has not been easy for us. My family disowned me and kicked me out. I was 5 months pregnant, struggling to finish high school. I did many things I am not proud of to try and get by. I thought this would be my life forever. When I started reaching out to the community and looking for resources to help me, a new found friend of mine told me about Niagara Furniture Bank and how they could help. My worker through Gillian’s Place assisted me through the process. I am forever grateful for the staff that has provided me with the furnishings for my son and myself to start over and live a ‘normal’ life. “ -Alana
“Before reaching out to Niagara Furniture Bank, I was sleeping on an air mattress. In all my 77 years, the only time I had ever slept on an air mattress was on family camping trips. When COVID hit, I lost my husband of 57 years. Our home became too much for me to take on alone but I tried my best until I was financially buried. It was then I decided to move into a smaller apartment building. After two months living there my bed, couch, all my linens were ruined with bed bugs. I left everything and stayed with a friend while I found housing assistance. In my new place I was left with an air mattress and a hot plate to cook my food on. I could not afford to make my new space feel like home again. I felt broken and ashamed. The Niagara Furniture Bank provided me a truly luxurious mattress and other furnishings to make my home welcoming. I am not ashamed to invite my family over anymore. Thank you Niagara Furniture Bank.” -Betty
